Square Boswell & Company rosewood square piano (a), 1850 - 1860, Rococo Revival substyle. Pine and oak secondary wood, mahogany trim. Rectangular two part hinged lid with applied molding , opening to a soundboard and interior gilt plate with molded and hand painted polychrome floral decoration, separate treble flat string bar (not screwed down or cast into the plate). Applied molding encircling the body, ornately scrolled pierced music stand lid opening to reveal 50 ivory and 35 ebony keys, valanced apron bordered top and bottom with molding, cabriole legs with carved acanthus scroll carving, 2 pedals. Marked Boswell & Co., Baltimore, MD on name board. Has two upright props (b) and (c) for keeping the top open. Props are located at C1, R1, D2. TIN: 56-20365449 Handwritten notes in the research file suggest that the piano belonged to the donor's grandmother, an Alexander descendant born in 1862.
