poss. 1721

Content Description:

Oil-on-board portrait of Eliza Gregory Nourse by the school of Mary Craddock Beale. The oval image shows sitter angled towards her right, facing the viewer, with long dark hair, wearing a gold-colored dress with white ruffled chemise showing at neckline. The back of the painting bears a typewritten notation reading "Eliza Gregory (d.1751), daughter of Sir William Gregory (1615-1696), married John Nourse of Weston Manor, Herefordshire, England on April 11, 1721. Their third son was James Nourse, father of Joseph Nourse, who immigrated to Virginia, May 10, 1769." (This appears erroneous; see "provenance.")
