Bust-length pastel-on-paper portrait of man titled "Portrait of a Gentleman," attributed to James Sharples, Jr. Subject, turned slightly to his right and shown before a gray background, wears a blue frock coat with blue and black collars, a red-and-white striped waistcoat, and a white shirt and neckcloth, and his hair is powdered and pulled into a queue. Pastel is surrounded by a black eglomise mat with a gilt rim around an oval opening and a carved giltwood frame. Center of reverse of frame bears sticker reading "Samuel J. Skoyles Modern Paintings Mezzotints and Etchings Restoring a Specialty Phone Connection 259 6th Ave. Brooklyn" (printed) and "Colonial Portrait Dry Stretched 30.8.16 St . P.P." (written).
