John Y. Mason had been a successful lawyer and landowner in Virginia before becoming involved in national politics. He served as Secretary of the Navy from 1844-1845, and again from 1846-1849. Mason continued the Navy's age of scientific exploration, started by the Wilkes Expedition to Antarctiva and the Pacific coast, by authorizing Lynch's trip to the Dead Sea.
