Content Description: 

Half-length oil-on-canvas portrait of Mary Anne Halsey Demotte attributed to Ezra Ames. The sitter is slightly turned toward her left and has brown eyes and brown hair, curled at the temples with the back section gathered into a wide comb at the crown. She wears a black morning dress with long sleeves, the waistline underneath the bust, and a large white ruffle at the neck, over which is draped a beige kashmir ("paisley") shawl with polychrome floral deisgns at the edges and a curled fringe. Demotte is seated in an armchair before a grey background with a red drapery coming from her left to her right side and floral upholstery or designs at her lower left side and holds a white piece of cloth in her right hand. Reverse is inscribed in ink "Mrs. Mary Ann Demott born in 1792 Painted by (Ez? struck out) Ames Oct. 1822." Paper label on proper right lower corner of reverse of canvas reads "Mary Ann Halsey Demotte youngest sister of my great grandfather Jemiel H. Halsey great great aunt of John Porter Merrell Johnston and Richard Howard Johnston Jr." Frame marked in pencil "The Picture (For) B. W. (?) DeMotte L--- March 15/78."
