Content Description: 

Medal, military. A purple heart medal hung on a ribbon. The heart-shaped medal is gold with a purple enameled heart in the center in which there is a gold bust of George Washington. At the top of the heart is a white shield with three red stars. The medal hangs on a purple ribbon edged with white and containing a pin with a safety catch. The gold lapel button is enameled with purple with white edges and a gold clasp. It is in a separate section of the box in a cushion. There are two extra pieces of gross grain purple ribbon with white edges. All the items are stored in a very dark blue leather trimmed box with a double gold border and two plush cushions within. Back of medal engraved: James R. Polkinghorne.
