Creator:Posey, Mary Alexander
American pieced quilt made by Mary Alexander Posey of squares of English silk dress fabrics from a variety of early American women and Posey family members, backed in linen. The quilt has small numbers on various squares which correspond to the dress fabrics of the women mentioned: (1) Dress of Betty Washington Lewis; (2) Dress of Nellie Custis; (3) Dress of Mrs. Beverly; (4) Dress of Mary Alexander (Thornton) Posey who married Thomas Posey; (5) Dress of Martha Washington; (6) Wedding dress of Mary Alexander Posey (Mrs. Thomas Posey); (7) Dress of Mrs. Fairfax; (8) Wedding dress of Lucy, daughter of Mary Alexander by her first marriage to George Washington Thornton. Lucy Thornton married John Posey, son of Thomas and Martha Matthews (first wife of General Posey); (9) Dress of Mrs. William Thornton. An unbleached muslin key on the lower left corner of the backing matches the numbers of the fabrics with their owners.
