Rear Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan served as both the second and fourth president of Naval War College. His tenures lasted from June 22, 1886-January 12, 1889, and from July 22, 1892-May 10, 1893. He also authored two books on naval history: The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1660-1783, and The Influence of Sea Power Upon the French Revolution and Empire, 1793-1805.
