Content Description: 

Members of Operation Deep Freeze II designed medallions to raise money for building a chapel at Williams Air Operating Base, McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. The Roman Catholic version (top left) depicts "Our Lady of the Snows". The Protestant one (top right) has a map of the continent and bible verse. Both have "Operation Deep Freeze III/USN/I[nternational]G[eophysical]Y[ear][19]57 Antarctica [19]58" on the reverse. Chaplain Leon S. Darkowski sent medals to President Eisenhower and Pope Pius XII.
