The workhorse of both Union and Confederate field artilleries, the versatile Napoleon fired 12-pound solid shot, exploding shell, and canister. The muzzle-loading smoothbore acquired its nickname after being modeled on a lightweight, maneuverable field gun that was developed in France by Napoleon III.
