These seaman's' combs are evidence of the enduring quality of hard rubber. They were undamaged after being underwater for more than a century! They carry the raised letters, "I.R. Comb Co, GOODYEAR'S Patent, May 6 1851." The reverse side carries, "U.S. NAVY." The combs came from the Quartermaster's storeroom and were not issued. After the USS Cairo was raised, the Park was contacted by Ace Comb Company who indicated that they still had the original comb molds.
