This model represents the USS Maine as planned during one design phase. There are several discrepancies between the completed ship and the model. After the USS Maine accidentally blew up in Havana Harbor, February 15, 1898, this model was displayed with the ensign at half mast in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. Smithsonian Institution photo.
Built by U.S. Navy, Bureau of Construction and Repair, New York Navy Yard, 1889.Model currently displayed at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
