Walnut Upholstered Folding Chair
ca. 1875-1890

Content Description:

Chair, folding. Made of turned walnut, in the Renaissance Revival style, upholstered in factory-made heavy cloth with floral design of flowers with greenery on an olive background. Chair back has gimp around its perimeter with unpolished brass-headed nails; seat upholstery has no gimp remaining. Modern staples under gimp indicate a 20th century re-upholstering. Crest rail in a pediment design, carved with volutes, and a raised center with burl veneer. Legs and back stiles of turned walnut, with large hemispherical brass caps covering three of the faces of the square pummels that incorporate pivot points. Front and rear legs form X on either side of seat, pivot to close chair; back stiles pivot from top of front legs and from rear of seat. Natural resin varnish, now darkened, with 2nd coat of newer varnish in top of it.
