Content Description:
The Continental Navy purchased a merchant schooner built in Baltimore late in 1775 and renamed her Wasp. The ship joined Esek Hopkin's squadron, which raided the Bahamas early in 1776 and returned to the Delaware Bay after that successful operation. Late in 1777 she and four other American ships engaged a British force at the mouth of the Delaware Bay. Following that clash she was run aground by her crew and destroyed to prevent capture.
