Letter of August 1785 from John Paul Jones to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, John Jay, reporting that the Algerians had declared war on the United States. This was one of several copies sent by Jones to ensure that one arrived safely. At the direction of Congress, Jay passed copies to the states. This copy from the New York state archives was damaged by a fire in 1911.
