The roller coaster, monarch of all amusement park rides, had
scarcely been invented before it began to undergo fearsome
refinements. This scary machine, elegantly called the “centrifugal
pleasure railway” by its inventor, opened at Coney Island, New
York, in 1901, and was quickly nicknamed the Loop the Loop.
