Cowboy and skyline, Dallas, Texas, 1945.
Leaning on the neck of his pony, a cowboy watches his herd graze on a diminishing stretch of pasture in front of a growing city. The American landscape had changed almost beyond imagining in the few decades that separate the crowded urban backdrop in this picture from the popular nineteenth-century image of the lone cowhand on the prairie. William Langley, who took the picture, doubtless posed his subject quite carefully to make a journalist’s point.
