The survivors, 50 years later.
These faces belong to the survivors of the first Mormon trek across the plains and mountains in 1847. The picture was taken on July 24 on the occasion of the 1897 Utah Pioneer Jubilee, and it was full of reminders of the turbulent Mormon past, from the murder of the church’s first leader, Joseph Smith, to a quasi- Biblical plague of crickets, from which the Mormons were delivered by a dramatic incursion of seagulls. The Jubilee celebrated the anniversary of their settlement in Salt Lake City with a grand concert at which William Jennings Bryan, the perpetual presidential candidate, was a guest of honor. There were a parade of floats, fireworks, and for every one of the patriarchs and their womenfolk, a gold medallion of Brigham Young.
