Reagan and the Cold War cont . . . Posted by American Heritage Staff at 07:00 AM EST Several letter writers in your recent Fall 2008 issue’s Letters to the Editor dismissed President Ronald Reagan's role in ending the Cold War, particularly in Poland. In fact, the Reagan administration worked tirelessly behind the scenes to support the efforts of Pope John Paul II and the Solidarity movement by funneling supplies and money into Poland through sympathetic organizations in the United States and Europe and by supplying the Pope with American intelligence information regarding the Soviet Union. Obviously the Poles recognize the value of Reagan's contributions. On a recent trip to Krakow, I observed in the center of a former planned Soviet "workers' paradise" called Nowa Huta, just outside Krakow, a blatant poke in the eye at the Soviets: Next to streets named in honor of Pope John Paul II and Solidarity, there is a square named after Ronald Reagan.
