  • Chuck Yeager born

    Retired Air Force Major General Chuck Yeager is born in Myra, West Virginia. Yeager enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a private in 1941 before Pearl Harbor, but later entered flight school and became a World War II fighter pilot. Yeager is best remembered for being the first man to break the sound barrier when his Bell X-1 broke Mach 1.

  • Dresden bombing begins

    The controversial Allied bombing of Dresden, Germany begins as Royal Air Force bombers begin to attack the eastern German city. Dresden, considered one of Europe's most elegant cities, did not serve as a major industrial center for Hitler's Germany, yet it was still targeted by Allied bombers.
