  • Berlin Blockade begins

    The Soviet Union cuts off all rail and road access to West Berlin, blockading the city from its Western allies. The blockade sought to isolate West Berlin from West Germany and force it into the Soviet bloc, but the American-led Berlin Airlift would later supply the city for the next nine months.

  • Henry Ward Beecher born

    Minister and abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher is born in Litchfield, Connecticut. The son of Calvinist minister Lyman Beecher, Henry became a staunch abolitionist and helped arm abolitionist forces in "Bleeding Kansas" by financing and shipping rifles to Kansas, the rifles known as "Beecher's Bibles."
