Mitchell Caldwell in 2007 after previously writing And the Walls Came Tumbling Down: Greatest Closing Arguments Protecting Civil Liberties and Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury with Mr. Caldwell. "And the Walls Came Tumbling Down" was cited in a brief submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Kiyemba et. al. v. Obama. During the Cold War, Lief served in the United States Navy as a submarine driver.
