Artist and author David Hunter Strother revealed how African-Americans desired their freedom and forced the Union Army to accommodate them. Though a native of this region and pro-slavery, Strother supported the Union and served with the Federal Army.

Flag Of 2nd United States Colored Troops

Black Pennsylvanians often fought in United States Colored Troops regiments organized outside the state, such as the 2nd USCT, formed in 1863 at Arlington, Virginia. The 2nd campaigned primarily in Mississippi and Florida, and proudly carried this regimental flag.

U.S. Model 1857 Light 12-Pounder Gun: The "Napoleon"

The workhorse of both Union and Confederate field artilleries, the versatile Napoleon fired 12-pound solid shot, exploding shell, and canister. The muzzle-loading smoothbore acquired its nickname after being modeled on a lightweight, maneuverable field gun that was developed in France by Napoleon III.

Union Draft Handbook

Date:
1863

This handbook stated that all the males between the ages of 25 and 45 were eligible for the draft. But poor vision in the right eye or missing fingers on the right hand could keep a man out of the army. Disabilities like these made it hard to fire a rifle.
