  • Lincoln delivers speech at Cooper Union

    Future President Abraham Lincoln delivers the Cooper Union Address to a group of prominent New York politicians and journalists at the Great Hall of Cooper Union, a private college in lower Manhattan. This speech, given prior to the Republican Party's nominating convention, introduced Lincoln, a former Congressman from Illinois, to the Republican establishment as he outlined his views on the Constitution and the expansion of slavery.

  • 22nd Amendment ratified

    Minnesota becomes the 36th state to ratify the Twenty-Second Amendment, officially making the amendment U.S. law. The amendment placed concrete two-term limits on American presidents, beginning with the next president after its ratification, President Dwight Eisenhower.

  • Battle of Moore's Creek

    North Carolina Patriots defeat a band of Loyalists at the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge in eastern North Carolina. Josiah Martin, the last Royal Governor of North Carolina, tried to assemble a Loyalist force to defend the colony, but Patriot forces routed the Loyalists and captured many prisoners after the battle.
