    Frontier explorer Daniel Boone is born in Becks County, Pennsylvania. Boone helped pave a path through the Cumberland Gap to Kentucky, where he founded the town of Boonesborough, one of the first English settlements west of the Appalachians.

  • President Kennedy issues naval blockade of Cuba

    President John F. Kennedy announces the naval quarantine of Cuba in a televised speech to the nation. The quarantine, ordered in response to the Soviet nuclear missile bases in Cuba, pressured the Soviet leadership to withdraw its missiles from Cuba.
