Frontier explorer Daniel Boone is born in Becks County, Pennsylvania. Boone helped pave a path through the Cumberland Gap to Kentucky, where he founded the town of Boonesborough, one of the first English settlements west of the Appalachians.
President John F. Kennedy announces the naval quarantine of Cuba in a televised speech to the nation. The quarantine, ordered in response to the Soviet nuclear missile bases in Cuba, pressured the Soviet leadership to withdraw its missiles from Cuba.
American patriots defend Fort Mercer against Hessian forces during the Battle of Red Bank. The victory was a significant morale boost for the Continental Army after Philadelphia had fallen to the British.
