Non-regulation Union light artillery musician's dress uniform jacket. Tailor-made. Dark blue with red tape and gilt metallic thread tape. Sleeves are 23 1/2"L. Body is 18"L. Jacket is 18" W from shoulder seam to shoulder seam, 15 1/2" W at the center of the chest. The stand-up collar is 1 1/4"H, 14" diam. inside the neck. Collar is lined with black velvet, fastens in front with one japanned iron hook and eye. Six panel body, the breast panels are darted upward from the hem. The body seams are handsewn. The jacket is single breasted with eleven buttons in the front, 5/8" diam., standard eagle "A" backmarked "D. EVANS & CO/SUPERFINE." Buttons are whipped onto jacket. The corresponding buttonholes are corded, worked in heavy brown thread. Red worsted wool tape 1/4"W, forms edging at the base of the collar and the inner sides and base of body. A false plastron on the front of the body is formed by 3/8" W red worsted wool tapes horizontally paired at each button and corresponding buttonhole. Tapes are secured by overcast stitches. Each pair of tapes is bordered by 1/4" W gilt metallic thread tape that is also overcast sewn. The serpentine outer edge of the false plastron is defined at the outer edges of the tapes by a 1/4" W gilt tape border. The border extends upward to the base of the collar. Lining is green/black, possibly a wool/cotton blend. The breast panels are heavily padded and machine-sewn quilted to the lining. The side panels are lightly padded and also machine-sewn quilted. The rear panels are lined but unpadded. An interior pocket with a vertical mouth is on the interior proper left breast. The pocket bag is a white twill, possibly a wool/cotton blend. A second pocket was added later to the proper right breast interior. It consists of a 6" x 7" green/brown fine plain weave fabric that is hand back-stitched to the quilted lining. The sleeves are one-piece with rear seams, heavily padded at the sleeve head and lined with brown pin-striped cream colored polished cotton. Two non-functioning fire-gilt small eagle "A" buttons on each cuff at the rear seam.
