From high in the air, this unusual view shows the launching of the S.S. Francis Preston Blair at the Marinship yard in Sausalito, California, shortly after noon on Sunday, January 3, 1943. The 10,500-ton Liberrty ship was named for a famous pre-Civil War journalist and political figure, and was christened by Mrs. Robert Digges, wife of Marinship's administrative manager. It was the eighth cargo vessel to be launched from the yard since its inception in March 1942.
