  • Kennedy speaks in West Berlin

    President John F. Kennedy, speaking in West Berlin after the construction of the Berlin Wall, announces "Ich bin ein Berliner." Kennedy's speech announced that the president, along with all the free people of the world, stood with West Berlin in fighting totalitarianism across its border.

  • UN Charter signed

    The Charter of the United Nations is signed at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center by 50 of the original member nations. The United Nations opened several months later after the five permanent Security Council members (United States of America, France, China, the Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom) ratified the charter.
