17th President Andrew Johnson is born in Raleigh, North Carolina. Born into poverty, Johnson eventually made a solid living in the tailoring business and was later elected to represent Tennessee in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Chosen as President Lincoln's running mate in 1864, Johnson became president following Lincoln's assassination the following year.
