BALL's BLUFF, VA-Union Brigadier General Charles P. Stone commands his troops to cross the Potomac River in makeshift boats and attack the Confederates in Virginia. The attack is a disaster, and sitting United States Senator Colonel Edward D. Baker, is killed in the fighting.
