The Confederate Army of Tennessee wins a tactical victory at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, fought northwest of Atlanta. The battle, one of the largest in the Atlanta Campaign, saw Union commander William T. Sherman attempt several frontal assaults on fortified Confederate positions in and around the mountain.
