U.S. Navy aviators Richard E. Byrd and Floyd Bennett claim to fly a Fokker F.VII, named the Josephine Ford, over the North Pole. The flight, which took off and landed at Spitsbergen, a Norwegian island, probably did not reach the North Pole based on flight time, but nevertheless Byrd and Bennett were both awarded the Medal of Honor for their heroism.
