General George B. McClellan is born in Philadelphia. McClellan commanded the Army of the Potomac during the Peninsular Campaign and the Battle of Antietam, but may be best known for his personal clashes with President Lincoln. Running for president as a Democrat in 1864, he was soundly defeated by Lincoln.
