American abolitionist John Brown is born in Torrington, Connecticut. An aspiring minister, Brown later opened several tanning shops. Later in life he pledged his life to the destruction of slavery, moving to Kansas to fight the pro-slavery militia. In 1859, however, Brown became a national figure as he led a slave rebellion at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, for which he would be executed by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
