American businessman, philanthropist, and abolitionist Johns Hopkins is born in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Born a Quaker, Hopkins' family freed all their slaves, and Hopkins ardently supported abolition and the Union during the Civil War. After making millions of dollars in investments, Hopkins founded Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
