American entrepreneur and financier John Pierpont (J.P.) Morgan is born in Hartford, Connecticut. Morgan distinguished himself in finance, helped expand the growth of the railroad industry, and later helped create U.S. Steel by purchasing Andrew Carnegie's steel business. A noted art collector, Morgan helped support the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History.
