Allied forces launch Operation TORCH against Vichy French-controlled North Africa. Soviet Premier Josef Stalin had pleaded with President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill to open up a second front in the Western Theater, and the operation allowed the Allies to retake North Africa.
