  • Robert E. Lee born

    General Robert E. Lee is born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. His father, Colonel "Light Horse" Harry Lee, served in the Continental Army with George Washington. Lee, a career officer in the United States Army, resigned his commission in 1861 to join the Confederacy, where he eventually led the Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 to 1865.

  • US-Japan defense treaty signed

    In Washington D.C., the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan is signed. Following the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty, Japan regained its sovereignty following the Allied occupation, and the 1960 bilateral security treaty with the United States ensured its Cold War security.

    American author and poet Edgar Allan Poe is born in Boston. Born Edgar Poe, he was adopted by Richmond merchant John Allan after his mother passed away. Poe is best known for developing detective fiction and science fiction into American literary genres, and is also regarded as one of the greatest American poets.
