  • Huckleberry Finn published

    Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is published in the United States. Widely considered to be one of the great American novels, this sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer challenges slavery and racism in the antebellum South. Due to its controversial language, it was first published in Great Britain in 1884 before it appeared on American bookshelves.

  • Robert Hanssen arrested

    FBI agent Robert Hanssen is arrested for espionage in Foxstone Park in Vienna, Virginia. Hanssen had been spying for the Soviet Union followed by the Russian Federation since 1979, and having served in FBI counterintelligence units, was considered the most dangerous intelligence breach in American history.
