  • Equal Rights Amendment passes through Congress

    Both houses of Congress pass the Equal Rights Amendment, which would extend equal rights to peoples of all gender, and allow Congress to enforce that amendment. However, the amendment fell short of ratification as only 35 state legislatures approved the amendment. Despite several extensions passed by Congress, the amendment could not secure the approval of three more legislatures, and the amendment failed.

  • Jamestown Massacre

    Over 300 colonists are killed in the Virginia colony as Powhatan warriors overwhelm the Virginia settlers following a series of disagreements. Chief Opechancanough, who commanded the Powhatan Confederacy following Powhatan's death, rejected diplomacy and tried to force the English settlers from their James River settlements.

  • Stamp Act

    The British Parliament passes the Stamp Act, a direct tax on the American colonies. The tax covered most printed goods including newspapers and legal documents, was vehemently opposed across the 13 colonies. The British sought to pay off outstanding debts from the French and Indian War.
