  • Lincoln assassinated

    President Abraham Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth during a performance at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. Booth, a Southern sympathizer and professional actor, had planned to kidnap Lincoln, but the Confederate surrender at Appomattox forced Booth to change plans. Booth entered the presidential booth of the theater and mortally wounded Lincoln, who died the next day at the Petersen House across the street.

  • NSC-68 released

    Chaired by Paul Nitze, a joint commission of military and civilian advisers present NSC-68 to President Harry Truman. The report, which helped define American foreign policy during the first half of the Cold War, called for a massive rearmament across the world to protect friendly states. After the North Korean invasion of South Korea, President Truman acknowledged the communist threat and approved the report.
