  • Paul Revere and William Dawes ride

    Paul Revere and William Dawes leave Boston to alert Massachusetts minutemen that a British army sought to capture Patriot arms and ammunition and arrest many Patriot leaders. Revere and Dawes were later accompanied by Samuel Prescott and successfully alerted every Massachusetts town between Boston and Concord.

  • San Francisco Earthquake

    An estimated 7.9 earthquake devastates San Francisco and the Bay Area, killing over 3,000 people. The natural disaster and the subsequent fires throughout the city leveled San Francisco, which had become the largest city on the West Coast.

  • Doolittle Raid

    Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle leads an American air raid on Japan in retaliation for the Pearl Harbor attack. The raid, launched by U.S. Army B-25 bombers from the USS Hornet, suprised the Japanese people as an attack on the Japanese home islands and dented Japanese imperial prestige. While the raid only caused minor damage, it helped boost American morale and forced the Japanese fleet to abandon its Indian Ocean campaign.
