  • Israel founded, Truman recognizes Israeli state

    Israel gains independence from Great Britain, ending the British mandate in Palestine. On the same day President Harry Truman announced that the United States would become the first state to recognize Israel.

  • Jamestown founded

    Virginia Company settlers found Jamestown along the banks of the James River. The first British colony in the United States, it was named after the current English monarch, King James I.
