  • Lindbergh crosses the Atlantic

    Charles Lindbergh lands at Le Bourget Airport in Paris, completing the first trans-Atlantic flight in the Spirit of St. Louis. Lindbergh flew from Roosevelt Field in Garden City, New York to France is just over 33 hours, winning the Orteig Prize for completing the non-stop flight.

  • ARC founded

    Clara Barton founds the American Red Cross, now part of the greater International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. Barton, who worked as a nurse and helped locate missing soldiers, wanted the United States to join the International Red Cross; when the government rejected this, Barton created the American Red Cross.
