  • Battle of Midway

    The Battle of Midway begins near the Midway Atoll in the Pacific Ocean between the American and Japanese navies. The decisive American victory protected Midway from the Japanese invasion and sunk four Japanese aircraft carriers; these losses prevented any further Japanese expansion in the Pacific Ocean.

  • Congress passes 19th Amendment

    The United States Senate passes the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees women the right to vote. Wisconsin became the first state to ratify the amendment, doing so on June 10, 1919, and ratification was completed on August 18, 1920.
