The Second Continental Congress appoints the Committee of Five to draft the Declaration of Independence. The committee included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, Robert Livingston, and the principal author of the Declaration, Thomas Jefferson.
American football coach Vince Lombardi is born in Brooklyn, New York. Lombardi helped popularize professional football and won the first two Super Bowls while coaching the Green Bay Packers; to honor his success, the Super Bowl trophy is named after Lombardi.
