    The Berlin Airlift begins as U.S. Air Force and British Royal Air Force planes deliver food and other supplies to the residents of West Berlin. Three days earlier, the Soviet Union had sealed off road and rail access to West Berlin, trying to force the democratic city to capitulate.

  • Battle of Kennesaw Mountain

    The Confederate Army of Tennessee wins a tactical victory at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, fought northwest of Atlanta. The battle, one of the largest in the Atlanta Campaign, saw Union commander William T. Sherman attempt several frontal assaults on fortified Confederate positions in and around the mountain.
