The Battle of Gettysburg, the bloodiest battle in the Civil War, begins as Union and Confederate forces clash in and around the southern Pennsylvania town. Outnumbered on the first day of the battle, the Federal Army of the Potomac eventually took up defensive positions south of Gettysburg.
