  • D.C. captured and burned

    A British army commanded by General Robert Ross capture Washington D.C., burning the White House, Capitol building, and the Department of the Treasury in the process. The British only targeted federal buildings, claiming the attack was in retaliation for American aggression shown towards York, Canada, presently known as Toronto.

  • Earhart flies cross-country

    Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly nonstop across the United States. Earhart became a national hero during the Great Depression for her aviation feats.
