  • U.S. Constitution completed

    The Constitutional Convention formally adopts and signs the United States Constitution in Philadelphia. Delaware would become the first state to ratify the Constitution on December 7, 1787.

  • Battle of Antietam

    Union and Confederate forces clash at the Battle of Antietam in Sharpsburg, Maryland, making it the single bloodiest day in American history. Considered a draw, the Confederates retreated back to Virginia after the battle, ending the Maryland Campaign.
